Some places are classed as Heritage listed or saved from demolition (in some, not all cases) due to their historic architecture or contribution to important archaeological significance. I think it is just as important for our generation to acknowledge and preserve more recent important places, buildings, works of art, recordings and written word so that future generations (or others?!) may be intrigued, astounded and appreciative of what they stand for and who has benefitted from us being a caretaker of perhaps some of the most inspirational places and works. We should also be very clear to point out, Abbey Road Studios, like some other places of importance, is still a 'working' monument of musical history and is inspiring musicians all over the world still... It's not just the 'physical' structure that is important to preserve, it's also the spiritual, emotional and inspirational aspects that should be considered to determine whether something is worth fighting for... (A bit like love really... Love builds your spirit up, Greed tears it down. Love will and should always prevail! ;)

It would be a travesty to sell the Abbey Road studios with all their history and ongoing value as a world class recording facility. While acknowledging that the financial viability of large studios has been compromised in recent years there is no alternative to a large recording space if good sound is the objective. Here in Australia we have lost virtually every large studio and standards have fallen. Closing Abbey Road studios is not an option!
Dan G, Music Producer, London

Read the book "Recording the Beatles" and the ask yourself, why would anyone want to destroy a building that created a huge legacy of music. The book in it's-self proves that the studio not only recorded music , but was also a pioneer in the development of studio technology. Abbey Road Studios is like what Mototown studios
in Detroit is to the United States. You can't destroy a building like Abbey Road Studios , it can not happen !!!!! john@antihotmail.com

I'm glad the studios are not sold, and I hope they will *not* become a museum, at least not entirely. Still the world finest studios with unique sound and history, best music was done there - Beatles, Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons Project, last Glenn Miller concert - and many John Williams soundtracks like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter. APP songwriter Eric Woolfson recorded there until his last days three months ago.

It would be a tragedy if Abbey Road Studios was sold to heartless property developers, after all the incredible history of the place.
I am in a band called `Babe Ruth`and we recorded our albums at this amazing studio. The atmosphere of creativity is tangible, and the idea of EMI selling out is hurtful (they should know better)and doesn`t do much to redeem their shabby reputation. on the contrary simple verifies their soul-less corporate nature - unless they wake up and ensure that the building remains an active studio, then there may be some hope for them

This magnificent studio complex has contributed too much music history, too many recording standards and innovations and too much in the evolution of audio technology over the years to be sold to any old property developer. If this is just sold off as another building that just happens to have a history, it would be the biggest detriment to music and biggest music disaster since February 3rd 1959. I believe that these studios should stay as studios, they should not be sold for developers to turn them into flats. Britain needs established studios to remain in existence, I am sure that the value and running costs of these studios are inflated hence the inability to become community based studios. Excessive overheads need reducing in times like this. The studios should be used by the community as a training facility part of the week for wanabe recording engineers, singer songwriters, maybe hire for singers workshops. All sorts at reasonable rates.
Lisa Kishkon, , Windsor ON Canada

Abbey Road is one of those world renowned icons which is not just about the building and the street crossing but the historical significance of the musical activities which it has hosted...and it's in the UK... how would it be seen around the world if we 'the British' destroyed it ourselves....?

For me, it all started with the Fabs. I would be a different person had their music not influenced me as a child. Ideally, the National Trust should buy Abbey Road. It should be maintained as a working studio (worthy independent bands could apply to use it) and at the same time, become a kind of living museum. The public, after paying admission, could walk through on a guided tour and watch (from a soundproof area) as an actual recording is made.

Thousands come from all over the world to score their films here with some of the world's great musicians. Reasons to save Abbey Road studios:
Abbey Road studio is not only one of a dying breed (which is a tragedy in it's-self in my opinion) - the large acoustic live room studio but it is also an outstanding first class example of that breed!! The experience of playing in that large live room is acoustically a real pleasure. It encourages the very best out of everyone who performs in there! The sounds & frequencies that it is possible to capture in that large studio live room are absolutely second to none! This studio is a one off in it's own right and should always be available to discerning musicians & artists to use. That is why the great & the good of every generation past have chosen to record there - what-ever the cost!!
If you pull it down or destroy it, you'll NEVER be able to better it or create anything as good as it again. It would never even get built in this day and age! - So WHY DESTROY IT??!!

As a long time fan of Cliff Richard I know that he used Anney Road many, many times since his earliest recordings. He is the most succesful British male artist and Abbey Road played a part in his success story and that of many others. It should be kept as a National Treasure.

As a musician and huge beatles fan myself, for whom the chance to record at the legendary Abbey Road would be both an aspiration and a privelege, i feel it's sale to developers would be a travesty. It's heritage in music history, forging some of the best albums ever, surely means that it's preservation as a national insitution, so future generations can make use of such world class and iconic facilities, is the only viable option. We owe it to the posterity of the acts that recorded such albums as Abbey Road there and to the budding musicians hopeing to pen the next classic.

As a former 22 year employee with EMI Music Canada (all in A&R and 17 years as the VP/Head of A&R), I implore EMI to reconsider this ill advised decision to sell Abbey Road. Abbey Road is unquestionably the most legendary recording facility in the world. It's preservation is imperative to the history of popular music. Having had the good fortune for several of EMI Canada's artists to record there over the years, it would be a sad day indeed, to see it auctioned off to the highest bidder, who may have no appreciation for it's historical meaning and significance. Please Mr. Hands, grab some reality. Is nothing sacred to you? Do you really want that to be part of your legacy? Do you really want to be known as the man who sold Abbey Road? I would hope not! Shame on you for even considering selling this global treasure in the first place!
Sincerely,
Tim Trombley

No tear it down immediately and then Westminster Abby and while you have the equipment get rid of that rickety old place where the queen stays... If we all work together on this we can get rid of tons of stuff that's holding up the progress of removing all those dirty old used structures... This could be a movement... a calling... People could make posters and march and shout slogans... Forget world peace and ending hunger we could focus our efforts on removing anything contact with our cultural roots... I am so devastated to hear about the possibility of the closure of my favorite "Abbey Road" EMI Studio's. I as I'm sure many of fellow recording artists think the same way. You must remember that it was one of the most prolific recording Studios in London as well as the ever remembered Olympic recording Studios. The Beatle's made most of their albums there. I in fact have a CD released at the moment with most of the tracks having been recorded in that wonderful Studio.
It most certainly must not be destroyed as it is a part of historic history and it would be a crime let it happen.
Ben Wren, Broadcast Network Assistant, London
If Abbey Road ceases to function as a recording studio, a large part of the British industry will suffer. For example, many of the American film production studios will no longer be able to come to England to produce music scores for their films, and as a consequence they are far less likely to use the post-production services in this country too. And many of the country's best classical musicians make their living by playing on sessions at Abbey Road and for film scores, while making a significant contribution to the British classical music scene, which will also no doubt suffer at this loss. The effect of its closing would be disastrous, even if you ignore the significance of the place as a hertiage site, which is enormous.

So many world famous recordings were made there. It would be nice to keep it, but how viable is it? Probably not. But they too made historic recordings there.
